Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
